PATIENT-Every season, with the change in temperature, I experience joint aches. What do you advise?

SUGGESTED SOLUTIONS-

There are different theories as to why joint pains increase in cold weather. It may be due to less circulation of blood to the extremities during winter to conserve the body heat and this may make the joints stiff and painful. Also the drop in pressure in the atmosphere also brings changes in joint pain.

AYURVEDA

External application of herbal oils followed by hotwater shower will be helpful to reduce the joint aches. Try to keep the body warm, use warm clothes, food – warm easily digestible, include soups, steamed sprouts.

NATUROPATHY

Keeping yourself warm and modifying the diet to keep the body warm can reduce the severity. Use only warm water to wash and drink. Include lots of soups, herbal teas, nuts like almonds, walnuts and peanuts, seeds like til, sesame and sunflower seeds etc

Regular warming up exercised and yoga asanas preferably suryanamaskar (depending on the comfort level) will also help the joints.)

HOMOEOPATHY

If the joints pain are more in rainy weather take Dulcamara 200 3 pills 3 times for about a week. You can take Calcarea phosphoricum 6x 4 pils 2 times a day during the cold months. Rhus tox 200 3 pills 4 times will also reduce the pain during the winter months. Natrum sulph on a constitutional basis under the supervision of Homeopathic doctor will make you overcome the tendency.

PATIENT-I am 38 years and I’m suffering from bad breath. I take Metrogel 400 mg which helped me for a month or so but the problem has reoccurred. I would like to get rid of this problem once and for all. Kindly help.

SUGGESTED SOLUTIONS-

Bad breath or Halitosis can occur due to dental causes following tooth decay or gum disease or it can be due to stomach issues with bad digestion. Bad breath can also be caused due to chronic nose congestion or chronic sinusitis. It can be addressed by looking into the origin of bad breath. Cleaning the teeth with a dental floss twice a day and cleaning tongue would be helpful. Taking lot of fresh fruits and vegetables will aid in digestion and clear the bowels.

Ayurveda

Take Kalyana gulam 1 tablespoon at bed time daily for 3 months. Use thriphala water to gargle (boil 1 glass of water with ½ tsp thriphala powder in it for 5 mins.) filter cool and use.

Naturopathy

Bad breath is mainly because of unhealthy digestive system. You have to undergo a complete detoxification

Homeopathy

Medicines like Merc sol, Carbo veg, Nux vomica, Acid nitricum etc can be used after consultation with a homeopathic doctor.

PATIENT-My father is 71, and in good health. He also leads an active life. The other day, he bent down to pick up something on the ground, and felt a sharp pain in his chest area. Worried, we took him to the doctor, got an x-ray done (that showed two cracked ribs!), and a blood test to rule out any possibility of blood cancer. Now the doctor says he has -3.5 bone density (osteoporosis) in his L1 vertebra (where the cracks in the ribs occurred), and the doctor has given him calcium. Also, his uric acid is high (6.5). He’s never had this problem before. Please suggest ways of improving his bone density (and lower his uric acid) so that his bones are not so fragile!

SUGGESTED SOLUTIONS-

Bone density is the medical term referring to the amount of matter per cubic centimeter of bones. Old age is associated with decreasing bone density in lumbar vertebra in both sexes although the rate of decline is faster in females.

Increased uric acid or hyperuricemia is the presence of excess of uric acid in the blood. Uric acid passes through the blood and enters blood stream. Most of it is excreted in urine. Normal levels are 3.4 to 7 mg/dL in males.

Ayurveda :

According to Ayurveda calcium deficiency is mostly related with metabolism

Kokilakshakam Kashayam 15ml +60 ml warm water twice a day before food will be helpful to reduce uric acid level.

Naturopathy

Include more of calcium rich food like green leafy vegetables, ragi, milk and milk products in his diet. He may also need to take additional calcium and vitamin D supplements. Exposure to sun before 9 am and after 5 pm helps as it helps in vitamin D Synthesis.

For increased uric acid levels reduce on tomatoes, meat and meat products, paneer, mushroom etc. Consume fruits like lemon, oramge, pomegranate which is rich in vitamin C

Homeopathy

Medicines like calcarea phosphorica 6x symphytum 30 can be useful in improving the bone density and prevent further fracture of bones.

For uric acid, Kali carb, Lycopodium, Benzoic acid etc are found to be useful. Consulting a local homoeopathic physician is suggested.

Patient- Erectile Dysfunction and Diabetes: I am a moderate diabetic patient with sugar levels of fasting 140 and PP 135. For The last 2-3 months I have been suffering from erectile dysfunction. Please advise.

Suggested Solutions

Erectile dysfunction is a common problem in men with diabetes.

Ayurveda

Control your blood sugar level with proper diet, medicine and exercise. Diabetes can also be due to some kind of stress if so identify the cause of stress and correct it by counselling and some lifestyle management like yoga.

Medicines like Cap Spirulinex – 2 at bedtime can be taken.

Homeopathy

Lycopodium, Agnus castus, Caladium, Selenium and Staphysagria are some of the remedies for erectile dysfunction. These can be taken in 30 potency 3 pills 3 times a day.

Naturopathy

Patient – Breast Cancer: My mother (63) was diagnosed with breast cancer seven months ago. Since then, she has undergone eight sessions of chemotherapy and is currently on Herceptine that is administered every third week. She also suffers from rheumatoid arthritis for the last few years. She has a severe case of dry mouth – that is, her salivary glands are not working properly. This problem has further worsened with chemotherapy. Because of the dryness, she develops mouth sores very frequently, resulting in her not being able to eat properly and her tongue becoming sensitive to spicy, salty as well as acidic food. Please suggest some remedy. Is this curable?

Suggested Solutions:

Chemotherapy often leads to reduced immunity of the person and hence many symptoms come up like dry mouth and mouth sores.

Ayurveda

Thaleesepatvadi Choornam – ½ tsp powder + 1 tsp honey 3 times a day will be helpful to improve function of salivary glands and digestion. Boil 5 gm Yashtimadha powder (Glyceerrizaglabra) in 2 glasses water for 2-5 mins, filter and cool it. Add 2 tsp of honey to it. Take mouthful of this liquid and hold it for 1or 2 mins and spit it out. Do this twice a day.

Homeopathy

Merc sol 200 3 pills 4 times a day can help in healing the mouth sores. Ars alb 30 3 pills 4 times can be used for detoxing the body. The other medicines that are helpful in combating bad effects of chemotherapy are Nux vom 200 and Aloes 200.

PATIENT-I was diagnosed with TB several years ago. I took the right treatment and it went away, but I read somewhere about persistent TB that can evade drug therapy by living for years in a dormant state. Now how does one cure this persistent TB, apart from taking a fresh course of medicines? Will these help or is the TB strain resistant to medication? I’m worried. Please suggest an alternative treatment

SUGGESTED SOLUTIONS-Tuberculosis is a common and deadly infectious disease caused by Mycobacteria. It most commonly attacks the lungs but can also affect the Central Nervous System, the Lymphatic System, the Circulatory System, the Genito Urinary System, Bones, Joints and even the Skin. About one-third of the world population is infected with tuberculosis, 10 % of which will develop the disease at some point in their lives. After the tuberculosis bacteria have been inhaled they reach the lungs and, within approximately six weeks, a small infection appears that rarely gives any symptoms. This is called a primary infection. After this, the bacteria can then spread through the blood. If you have a healthy immune system, in most cases the infection will remain dormant without doing any obvious harm. Months or even years later, however, the disease can become reactivated in different organs if the immune system is weakened.

Naturopathy

Which part has been affected by TB? In general yoga and pranayamas can help to a large extent. Also healthy eating is advisable which includes fresh fruit and vegetables, milk, eggs, sprouts etc.

Ayurveda – To improve the immunity, Indukantham Kashayam (15ml)+60 ml warm water can be taken twice a day before food.

Homeopathy

Generally after consultation with a Physician, Constitutional medicines like Calcarea carb, Silicea, Baryta carb, Drosera, Stannum, Kali carb, Thuja are prescribed which help in improving the immune system and also prevent any further episodes of Tuberculosis.

PATIENT-I am a 48 year old patient of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), diagnosed around 10 years ago. I am on steroids, which I take every alternate day.My kidneys have been affected, and a sonography showed a lesion on the right kidney. My BP is extremely high, it goes up to 220/120. My uric acid and cholesterol are also high.I am afraid that the steroids are taking a toll on my health. Also, is SLE curable? Could you please suggest alternate therapy or line of treatment?

SUGGESTED SOLUTIONS

Systemic lupus erythematosus or SLE or lupus is a chronic auto immune condition where the immune system attacks the body’s cells and tissue, resulting in inflammation and tissue damage. Genetic factors increase the tendency of developing autoimmune diseases. SLE can affect any part of the body but most often harms the heart, joints, skin, lungs, blood vessels, liver, kidneys, and nervous system. The course of the disease is unpredictable, with periods of illness alternating with remission. Lupus can occur at any age, and is most common in women. Common initial and chronic complaints are fever, malaise, joint pains, myalgias, and fatigue.

Although SLE is not considered curable, patients can enjoy periods of extended remission with virtually no clinical activity, and even the disappearance of antinuclear antibodies.

Homeopathy

Homeopathic Physicians would recommend the homeopathic treatment based on the patient’s condition and medical history. Medicines like Apis mellifica, Arsenicum album, Causticum, Rhus toxicodendron, Ruta graveolens are helpful where 3 pills every 2 hourly or 4 hourly for a few days till symptoms are better. Constitutional medicines like Calcarea Carb, Thuja occidentalis are given by Homoeopaths after the case details are taken.

PATIENT-I have a very old problem of burning soles. The burning becomes more pronounced when the bowels are not clear. The burning is so great that even in winter I can’t put on socks. My digestion is good, and I have a good appetite. The pain has now become unbearable, and I have had it close to four decades now. Please suggest a treatment.

SUGGESTED SOLUTIONS:

Burning feet is a common complaint and can be caused by a number of conditions. It can keep people awake at night and be a source of continuous pain. It is more common in those over the age of 50 years but also can occur in younger age groups. The condition is more common in those with diabetes as part of nerve damage. A burning foot may be mild and local and easily treatable or it may indicate a more serious general medical problem that needs further investigation.

Many feet just ache and burn at the end of a long day, especially in those who are on their feet all day or who are overweight. Hot and sweaty feet can also cause a burning foot sensation. Sometimes vitamin deficiencies especially Vitamin B and blood disorders like anemia can cause burning feet and occasionally sensitivity to chemical substances in socks and shoes can also be a cause.

Naturopathy

Is the sugar level normal? Was any test done to detect the cause. Like nerve tests etc

To bring down the burning sensation cold mud application on the feet will help. Leave this mud on for 20-30 minutes. Do it once a day

Ayurveda

Application of Pinda Thailam and Kachithapinda thailam for 30 mins twice a day will be helpful. Satgiloe powder – ½ tsp with 2 tsp milk can be taken twice a day after food.

Homeopathy

Arnica is excellent for burning soles due to over exertion If the cause is Diabetes, medicines like Arsenicum Album, Acid Phos will help. Apis mel is useful if there is burning, swelling of feet with sharp pains. These medicines can be taken depending on the cause, 3 pills every 4 hourly for a couple of days. If there is not much of relief, a Homoeopathic physician has to be consulted where after a case evaluation, the constitutional medicines are prescribed.

PATIENT-I have a one-and-a-half year old who’s allergic to cow’s milk. I’d like to pursue homeopathic treatment for this. Could you please advise how to proceed further

SUGGESTED SOLUTIONS-

Milk intolerance or milk allergy is the result of processing of the milk and this is the milk that is available in market today. The fat content of milk is processed and this leads to a variety of symptoms like frequent colds, colic, chronic diarrhea, constipation, asthma, heartburn, stomach pain, skin reactions, headaches and irritability.

Ayurveda

Boil ¼ glass of cows milk with 1 glass water and a pinch of turmeric. This dilution wlong with turmeric helps in reducing allergic reactions. It also improves the digestion.

Rajanyadi choornam – ½ tsp + ¼ tsp ghess + 1 tsp honey twice a day will be helpful.

Naturopathy

An effective alternative to cows milk would be the ragi milk, rice milk or soya milk. Also include all fruits and fruit juices.

If the child could tolerate introduce him to yoghurt, cottage cheese etc

Homeopathy

Homeopathic remedies can be used to reduce the body’s sensitivity to milk. You need to meet a homeopathic physician for a complete case evaluation as the treatment in homeopathy is very individualistic. Meanwhile you can give your baby Aethusa 30 3 pills 3 times a day till you meet the doctor.
